I have recently acquired this lovely piece from a family downscaling. They confirm that it belonged their family of dutch origin and that it stayed next to the fireplace and came out from Holland. It must have had a knob on the lid as there is a mark where one could have been. It has a fair amount of tarnish on lower section of the pot. The base under shows some rust. The paint has cracked off the handle
Dont hesitate to ask any questions.
Possibly made in Netherlands in the 1800’s. The Dutch doofpot was a bucket to store embers in at the end of an evening. The bucket is sealed. This allows the wood fire to burn out, from lack of oxygen. The remaining fuel could be used to start the next fire.
