Antique coal iron - sad iron - cast iron - smoothing iron

What a job it would have been trying to iron with one of these.   Apart from being really heavy the PT involved in knowing how hot it was or not burning your master or mistresses clothes would have been terrifying.  The lid opens and burning embers were placed inside the iron.  Please note that the lid has at some time in the far distant past been welded together.   I love this feature it shows how we have change to being in such a throw away society.
